Kefalonia is the largest and most mountainous island of the Ionian Islands and the third in population after Corfu and Zakynthos. It is opposite to the entrance of the Patraikos Gulf, north of Zakynthos, south of Lefkada and west of Ithaca.

The island has an area of approximately 734,014 sq. Km. and there are approximately 35,801 inhabitants. A major part of the area is occupied by the Aenos Mountains characterized as a National Park with the highest peaks Megas Soros (1,628 m), Agia Dynati (1,131 m), Efmorfia (1,043 m) and Kokkini Rachi (1,078 m). The most important plains are those of Kranaia, the peninsula of Paliki, Araklio and Sami.

The coastline of Kefalonia forms many bays and capes. The most important bays are Sami, Myrtos, Lourda, Atheras, Fiskardo, Livadi, Argostoli, also known as Kutavo. The main capes (starting from the south and moving in the east direction) are Munda, Kapros, Sarakinikos, Mitikas, Kentri, North Daphnoudi, Atheras in the northwest, Ortholithia, Skiza and Gerogompos in the west and Akrotiri, Agia Pelagia, Liakas, Kastanas and others further south.

The coasts are generally rocky and steep towards the Ionian Sea, while they have milder formations towards the eastern side. Of particular interest are the caves of the island, such as Melissani, Agalaki, Agion Theodoron, Zervati, Drogarati Cave, Sakkou Cave and more. Myrtos beach on the northwest side of the island has been voted 11 times as the best Greek sea.

On the west side of the island and specifically in Paliki, one can visit the beaches of Petani and Platia Ammos.
